I recommend checking out a website/podcast called Writers on Writing (also known as Pen on Fire). They often interview agents and I've gleaned tons of insight on the publishing process through listening to that show. But here are the basics: put together a list of literary agents who are a good match to whatever your daughter has written. For example, if she wrote a fantasy novel, you want to find agents who represent the fantasy genre. Most agents are limited in the genres and whether they rep fiction/nonfiction/poetry. Try to find out what other authors they represent. Next, you should check their sites to find out exactly what they want in the form of a submission. The submission package will vary depending on the agent and the type of book. For example, with nonfiction, there would be a book proposal. With fiction, there will be a synopsis and/or a partial (1-3 chapters from the novel). From what I have heard, the query letter is the single most important piece of your submission packet. You should invest in a book about writing query letters and spend a lot of time writing one. Good luck to you!

Hi ARIEL, congrats on being a published author so young!
My daughter is finishing a book and I wanted to contact some publishers but....you have to have an agent:-(. I'm not native US so it's all new to me. We live on an island, barely have acces to the mentioned magazines. So I will keep on looking on the internet, and hope to find somebody who can help us!

Keep on writing:-)!

I'm also thirteen years old, and an already published author. Waiting for news about your work is always stressful, but stick to it. If you work hard enough someone will always like what you did, and appreciate your effort. It just takes skill and a little luck. [:
