June Announcements

June 3, 2008 · Written by Melissa Donovan

bloggingMay has come and gone so fast I barely had time to say hello to it. We focused on freelance writing throughout the month of May, and it proved to be a popular topic.

I want to thank everyone who participated in comments with thought-provoking questions and also those who shared their own freelancing experiences. I always say that freelancing isn’t for everyone but for those who choose it, there’s a wonderful community of bloggers and freelancers that will help you find your way and offer support and encouragement.

I also want to thank everyone who linked here this past month. I’m always immensely flattered when anyone feels the posts here are valuable enough to share.

Now that June’s here, it’s time to shift gears a little. This month, blogging is all the rage at Writing Forward. That doesn’t mean freelancing is a thing of the past. As always, the spotlight will guide the topics this month but it will not dominate them. I’ll be wrapping up the series on five ways to improve your writing and sharing some more of my favorite poets and poems.

Blogging will be an interesting topic though, because there is a lot to cover. In fact, there are many (and by many, I mean hundreds of thousands) of blogs that focus entirely on blogging. So, is there anything about blogging that you guys want to discuss specifically? If so, leave a comment with a question or topic idea and I’ll try to address it in a post. Or, we can just chat it up in the comments.

I’m working on a few different ideas for posts this month. Last month, I revealed how I launched my freelance writing career, so this month, I’ll talk about my experience to date with blogging. I’ll also talk about what I’ve learned about blogging from a personal perspective. And of course, we’ll talk about blogging from a writer’s point of view (did you guys know that many bloggers do not consider themselves writers?). I don’t think the greater writing community has fully embraced blogging yet but we’re getting there and it’s an issue worth exploring.

That’s it. Summer’s around the corner and it’s the month of dads and grads, so be sure to honor them. And yourself. And me. June happens to be my birthday month and there will be more candles on the cake than ever before!

When is your Birthday Melissa! Your a Gemini. I have a Gemini moon.

If I put all the candles on my cake it would burn the house down.

I don’t understand why bloggers don’t consider themselves writers. A blog is a form for writing. When you type stuff out on the keyboard you’re writing.

It’s kind of funny, I was just over at Barbara Swaffords blog and she was talking about controversial posts and how they spike your traffic.

I have always wanted to write somthing of substance that I felt passionate about, or else I can’t write it. I really don’t care about the numbers game. I don’t sell anything except myself, and I really don’t think you guys will buy me!

But I like to hear the reasons people blog, and what kind of direction they see themselves going with their blog. Social? Business? What? I see it as more of a social endeaver myself. And I like to give people support.

  2. @Ellen, Mine’s the 7th, when is yours? Yep, I’m a Gemini but I have a Virgo moon.

You’re right, it is surprising that bloggers don’t consider themselves writers (but it does explain all those grammar infractions).

I think every blogger blogs for a different reason. I know my reasons for blogging today are quite different from the reasons I originally started blogging.

And Ellen, we totally buy you and your blog! Your blog is fantastic!

Thanks Melissa! Words like this make my day. Especially when I feel down and out.

Oh, and speaking of grammar infractions I notice I have one big glaring one in my last post up there. Ahh!

I’m looking forward to you describing how you have evolved within your blog.

It sounds like you have a lot of mercury in your chart. That’s great for communicating.

    My birthday is Dec. 17.

Hey, my sister’s birthday is the 7th, too! (I won’t ask you what year, though.)

I find blogging such an interesting topic, because it means so many different things to different people. I follow knitting blogs and writing blogs (and others, too, of course) and they have such completely different feels. And corporate kinds of blogs are different yet again. It’s just totally unique and … different!

(I know, I’m wondering how many times I can use “different” in a sentence, too.)

  5. @Ellen, Not long ago I made a spelling error in the title of a blog post. It was so embarrassing! I fixed it but still…

My chart has a lot of earth too. I’m thankful for that; it keeps me grounded ;)

@Deb (Punctuality), Musical genius Prince and fun-loving singer/actor Dean Martin were also born on June 7th. I too enjoy seeing how bloggers each have their own reasons for blogging. I started this blog with a professional mindset but now I try to focus on making sure it’s fun (for me and for readers).
