Editing Services

A writer’s work is never done. We invest endless hours of writing, revising, editing, and proofreading to polish a rough first draft into a publishable piece that will engage editors, agents, and readers.

It helps to have a second pair of eyes look over your work to make sure it’s not only free of grammatical errors, but also to make sure that it’s engaging, compelling, and highly readable.

Editing services are perfect for writers who want their work proofread for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and who are also looking for feedback regarding the overall readability of a piece. While proofreading focuses exclusively on mechanics, editing digs deeper, and looks at the wording, sentence and paragraph structure, and ensures flow and consistency.

Comprehensive Editing Services for Creative Writers

When you hire me to edit your written material, you’ll get:

  • Proofreading (check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation)
  • Review of wording, sentence structure, and transitions
  • Check for consistency in tone, language, and character or setting
  • Recommended changes incorporated into the edited material
  • Editorial notes detailing common errors and issues that were repeated throughout the piece

For all editing and proofreading projects, I adhere to the standards set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style. If there is another style guide you’d like me to use for your piece, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your needs.

How it Works

I use a simple five-step process:

  1. Initial reading of the piece
  2. Edit (repeated until the piece reads smooth and clear)
  3. Proofread (repeated until the piece is free of errors)
  4. Review
  5. Prepare editorial notes

You’ll receive your project edited and marked up in Microsoft Word, which means you’ll be able to view every single change, comment, and suggestion. You can go through and accept or reject the changes individually or apply the proofreading and editing changes to the entire document with a single click.

Also, you’ll get a second document containing editorial notes, which specify common mistakes that were found in the material as well as general suggestions and recommendations.

Rates

Editing projects are $25 per document plus 5¢ per word.

Discounts are available for longer pieces, such as full-length manuscripts.

Who's Flying This Ship?

My name is Melissa Donovan. I'm a self-employed website copywriter and web content specialist.

Creative writing is one of my passions. I earned a BA in English with a concentration in creative writing, and I've been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember. I write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. And of course, I blog.

My goal is to promote great writing, help writers stay inspired and motivated, and to act as an advocate for writers.
