Professional Critiques

Are you tired of receiving rejection slips? Do you want feedback on your creative writing from someone other than a friend or family member?

Getting an honest and objective opinion about your written work is not easy. The people who are close to you might be blind to the flaws in your writing or they simply might want to refrain from hurting your feelings.

But getting feedback is essential for any writer who is serious about getting published or finding readers. A professional critique will identify your strengths so you can build on them. It will also pinpoint the weaknesses in your writing so that you know which areas need improvement. Critiques are perfect for poetry as well as both fiction and creative nonfiction.

Professional, Objective Critique Services

When you hire me to critique your written material, you get:

  • A complete proofread, checking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • A thorough review that examines structure, tone, consistency, flow, and readability
  • An in-depth written critique noting strengths and weaknesses, which includes suggestions for improvements and recommendations for revisions

For all editing and proofreading projects, I adhere to the standards set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style. If there is another style guide you’d like to use for your piece, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your needs.

How it Works

Critiques are ideal for poetry as well as fiction, articles, essays, and other creative writing projects.

When I critique your work, I’ll start by proofreading and marking up your document to make sure that the basic mechanics of grammar, spelling, and punctuation are addressed.

Then, I’ll go through and add notes and comments, and make other minor changes to show where contextual improvements can be made.

Finally, I will provide a written critique, which explains where the piece is working well and where it is falling short. Your critique will include tips and suggestions for how you can improve the piece, and you’ll be able to apply those suggestions to all your future writing projects. To put it succinctly, you’ll become a better writer.

Rates

Critiques are $25 per document plus 7¢ per word.

Discounts are available for longer pieces, such as full-length manuscripts.

How to Get Started

To get started, simply contact me and tell me about your creative writing project.

Are you working on a large, long-term project? Having trouble reaching your writing goals? Want to improve your writing? You can hire me as your writing coach.

If you want something simpler, then take a look at my proofreading or editing services. If you’re not sure which service would be best for you, then I can always make a recommendation.

Who's Flying This Ship?

My name is Melissa Donovan. I'm a self-employed website copywriter and web content specialist.

Creative writing is one of my passions. I earned a BA in English with a concentration in creative writing, and I've been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember. I write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. And of course, I blog.

My goal is to promote great writing, help writers stay inspired and motivated, and to act as an advocate for writers.
