Are you working on an article for print or online publication? Have you written a manuscript that you’d like to start shopping around to literary agents? Do you write essays, poems, or short stories?
If so, you might want to hire a professional proofreader to review your project and make sure that it’s free of grammatical errors.
Proofreading services are ideal for writers who have a strong grasp of grammar and language and who are adept at creating a compelling piece that is highly readable and engaging. Yet no matter how well you write, you still need another pair of eyes to review your work – because typos and grammatical mistakes have a tendency to sneak past even the sharpest writers.
Sharp, Flexible Proofreading Services for Creative Writers
Proofreading is all about the mechanics of language. When you hire me to proofread your written material, I’ll check for:
- Grammatical mistakes
- Typographical and spelling errors
- Run-on sentences and fragments
- Punctuation (quotation marks, apostrophes, commas, etc.)
- Subject-verb agreement and tense
When it comes to proofreading creative writing (as opposed to technical, academic, or business writing), flexibility is essential. The flow and integrity of your piece will always hold more weight than the rules of grammar. After all, part of being creative is breaking the rules, right?
So, what happens if I’m proofreading your work and I come across a sentence that starts with a conjunction, ends with a dangling preposition, or contains a bit of slang? Simple! I’ll make a note of the grammatical rule, just to make sure you’re aware of it – but if breaking the rule makes your piece stronger, I won’t change a thing!
How It Works
I have a simple three-step process:
- Initial reading of the piece
- Proofread and markup (this is repeated until the piece is clear and free of mistakes)
- Final review
You’ll receive your document marked up in Microsoft Word, which means you’ll be able to view every single change, comment, and suggestion. You can go through and accept or reject the changes individually or apply the proofreading changes to the entire document with a single click.
For all editing and proofreading projects, I adhere to the standards set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style. If there is another style guide you’d like to use for your piece, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your needs.
Rates
Proofreading services are $25 per document plus 5ยข per word.
Discounts are available for longer pieces, such as full-length manuscripts.
